Dramatis Personae

* Note: These lists are not exhaustive, although they are fairly comprehensive! They are also subject to revision as my brain starts to work

Well, of course, there'll always be family. There are two kinds: The kind you get born with (<lj user=“dychmygu”> and so forth, and I don't think I need to mention all the things I'm grateful to her for), and the kind you choose.

Here you'll find folks such as <lj user=“terrana”> (naturally), <lj user=“taldragon”> (who's my big sister), <lj user=“jencen”> (little brother. Heheee!). Also worth mentioning are <lj user=“kjorteo”> and <lj user=“kestenan”>, because while we've lost contact to quite a degree over the last few years, they still occupies the same fuzzy little place that they always did, and hopefully some day I can fix the distance.

(I'd be tempted to include a few of the Alfandria 'core group' in here, too, because they're still tagged as that in my mind, but they're a little more distant. In family terms, perhaps cousins would be a better description. Either way, <lj user=“gleth”>, <lj user=“sigridir”> and a few others who very likely know who they are fit here, even if we're not in direct contact in the same way we used to be.)

RL friends

There are a very few people who I hold purely RL-based friendships with. This is refreshing, and very welcome - they're local, so there's no travelling required and things like meeting up for drinks or films are possible. But there's a vanishingly small number of them!

Pretty much this comes down to <lj user=“weldmeshut”>, who's a co-worker of mine and generally awesome (and probably knows me quite a lot better than most by now because I /do/ tend to babble), and a local couple (who I amusingly met via AdultFriendFinder back when I was curious about what sort of results I'd get if I /did/ set up a profile there) pseudonamed Bryan and Jane, who've been mentioned here a few times over the last couple of years, I think.

Close Friends

A tough one. There's no real hierarchy amongst my friends - you'll mostly get the Standard Package of concern when it's warranted, help if it's possible and respect and amusement and general tomfoolery when it's not.

Regardless, there are a bunch of people who I strongly believe without whom I'd be good deal more broken than I am. For instance, I've known <lj user=“tawatkin”> for eight and a half years now, and for the first three of those he was instrumental in helping me throw off the shackles of my early teenage years and the ingrained argh that was the result of my stepmother's psychological warfare (there's a small group involved there, too - <lj user=“spiritraptor”>, <lj user=“howlfox”> and <lj user=“nicolryzek”>). Then there're folks like <lj user=“archadia”> who I effectively grew up alongside (whatever the physical distances involved).

<lj user=“galis”> and <lj user=“velos”> are slightly more recent acquisitions, but both are very dear to me, and I owe 'em for a lot of recent emotional support. (There's another group built up around these two, largely centred in the Sunclub on Tapestries, but I'm not sure how many of those would go beyond the 'people I'd like to know better' heading)

People With Unresolved Emotional Baggage Attached

Far too many of these, and they'll all fit to some extent into one or other of the other categories here mentioned. There are folks like <lj user=“spiritraptor”> (my ex-Master, who I'd still like to continue to have some kind of friendship with, but I'm not yet in any state to pursue that in light of recent changes in our interactions), <lj user=“kohsyiusabrdrak”> (who I love dearly, but who Terrana loathes fairly comprehensively, and besides wants monogamy which I don't think I'm structured to provide), and <lj user=“amerithe”> (who I first met a few years back, got reasonably close with almost scarily quickly, then for various reasons stopped talking to for a while - we started talking again about two months ago, with the intention on my part of recapturing the level of friendship we had initially, but the emotions have stepped in again and it seems to be spiralling a bit).

Also compare <lj user=“solanth”> (ex-boyfriend of Terr and I from last year), and <lj user=“larthan_d”> (ex-girlfriend of Terr and I from about three years ago, and the preceding four years), with whom 'getting over' doesn't seem to be on the cards, even if there's very little chance of us even really as much as talking again.

Also also compare <lj user=“snowfields”> (for whom I wasn't what he was looking for, however much he thinks that doesn't matter).

More information on these to follow in a future post, I imagine.

People I'd Like To Get To Know Better

What, not 'friends'? Well, this category again has a lot of spillover into the others - as well as which, most of you fall into this category. Actually, there are a lot of folks who'll never read this who fall into this category!

Yes, it's a cop-out. No, I don't much care. I tend to consider all of you my friends on some level or other - if you weren't, you wouldn't be seeing this.

'Getting to know people better' is fairly low on the agenda right now, behind 'try to fix my mental state so I can enjoy life again' and 'attempt to remember how to maintain existing interpersonal relationships in a meaningful manner'. But it's there, and it's near-constant, I'm just annoyingly unfit to be doing it right now (as more than a few of you can likely attest - my attempts to talk to <lj user=“gushi”>, for instance, have generally been rather abortive because I just run out of things to say and start gushing shy nonsense). For now, I think I'm pretty much a spectator, but this will hopefully change in the nearish future.

Addendum: Much as I dislike breaking it down to a simple, single word, I'm poly - it's the way I'm built, brainwise. However, Terrana is my 'primary' relationship and that's not going to change, ever. I don't have any other 'official' ones at present, but there are at least two that can be considered some degree of romantic entanglement. They are all aware of each other, and I strive to maintain a high degree of transparency in dealings regarding them.

Drone

It was small; barely the size of a pair of balled fists. It gleamed in the low light with just a hint of menace, although it somehow managed to convey the impression that if it wanted, the casing of its body would shift in some subtle way to absorb every last impinging photon, and the aura field surrounding its lower surfaces (for politeness' sake, of course) would vanish like the last hint of sunlight on a cloudy day. And then, who knew what hidden mischief it could get up to in the shadow-streaked niches of the bar?

Of course, even bleeding-edge state-of-the-art Offensive-class Drones had their days off, and that's what this one purported to be up to, lounging in the back of a darkened bar somewhere in the rear half of the GSV Looming Distraction. GSVs weren't supposed to have dark, seedy bars, but somehow this space contrived to be both.

The little machine had even ordered itself a drink, which it held cupped in a clear field-extension a few inches above the table. Such affectation wasn't unknown among drones, but it was certainly regarded with a degree of disdain or even sympathy; the sign of a mind not quite as well-integrated as its peers might have hoped.

It tilted slightly; turned to face me as it repeated my question. “What do I want?” said Destrelan Fropine-Holst Argest Sandrelhyke. “To be human, of course.”

I didn't quite know what to say to that.

Loyalty

Now, most of you will know that my loyalty is something that tends to be an absolute, if a confusing one (not being a Cani, reconciling conflicting loyalties on an instinctual level isn't part of my mindset, sadly!)

That's a post for another time. This one's about a rather more focused topic.

Which contains vague BDSM references and will soon go behind the never-really-actually-used TMI filter (which will soon start being used, I think)

It's pretty common knowledge that I have a Master (there may not be any detail beyond that, but I've mentioned it at least in passing to most people with whom I've discussed anything relationship-related). The situation's been in place 'officially' for about two years now, with friendship and more 'playful' hints at the same extending back a good three or four years before. During this time I've maintained a good deal of loyalty to him and been attentive when possible and generally done my best to be a good pet (within certain restrictions: Namely the lack of ability to travel over the last year or so [itself due to the Previous Housemates and the Money Situation], and my general fear of initiating contact in most cases [99.9% of all contact in the last year, at least, has been initiated by me, but since I have a lot of trouble pushing myself to explicitly contact /anyone/ these days that's been fairly rare]).

The situation's modified somewhat over the time that I've not been free to travel. Contact, as noted, has been a great deal less prevalent, and during that time I've started to feel a lot more disconnected, a lot less involved in a lot of facets of my life outside Cardiff. In addition to this, there have been changes in how he acts towards certain other of the people I care about, and that in turn has led to problems arising with my Significant Other - I've talked with him about these behaviours, and he doesn't seem to realise that there's any kind of problem in one case, and in the other he seems to positively enjoy the emotional unrest he's promoting in the target. This doesn't sit well with me, fairly obviously, and I honestly can't support that kind of activity, whether or not it's my place to criticise.

There are other reasons why I'm in two minds about the whole thing. Now, I find it very hard to motivate myself, and I have an impulsive (and in the face of stress, somewhat self-destructive) nature in some respects. I use the concept of 'Master' to keep a lid on this in some respects - 'Would he be angry at this', 'would he approve' and so forth. While this does apply, I don't honestly thing this is based on my Master so much as an idealised, more-or-less imaginary version of him - I don't think he'd actually care in most of the cases where this comes into play (in hindsight, most if not all of the D/s aspects of our relationship have been entirely sexual1, with nothing much outside it - I'm not sure this fits the definition that I'm looking for). Still, the removal of a physical focus of that concept (however distant in terms of communication and travel) would have a negative impact, I think.

The question that arises is this: How far does loyalty extend (in this case or any other), and can I honestly say that I'm still willing to fill this role, even if we're not considering the fact that it's likely to cause a great deal of friction with [info]terrana in any case? (Terr does, of course, come first amongst the considerations here but there's a lot of thought that's been going into this in any case, even before her wishes came to light.) And how does one go about removing oneself from this kind of relationship without it irrevocably costing the friendship that came before with it? Largely, I suspect it'll be a case of building up the courage and then just biting the bullet and bringing the topic up, but.. we'll see. It's entirely possible that I'm worrying far too much about the whole thing.

1: There will be a larger post to follow at some point about my general situation and the various factors influencing it - this is the one that's been mentioned as currently 'in progress'.

Ping!

Lizard

Ping sits before you, a shimmering cobalt blue firelizard. Except where her green fur covers them, her glasslike, semitransparent scales catch the light and hold it, giving the effect of glowing from within. This thick fur runs in a mane of sorts, halfway down her long neck, not quite joining the larger patch set between her shoulders. The three claws on each paw are blunt enough to be non-dangerous, but just sharp enough to be used for defense if need be. Although this lizard fears a sharp wit more than sharp claws, often times having trouble keeping up with conversations. Her large eyes are set wide in her head, many-faceted and colourful, although more often than not the colours whirling within them are greens and blues, showing happiness and contentment. Little can offend or rankle with her, making her an easy person to get along with.
Perpetually innocent and childlike, Ping sometimes has a hard time understanding some things, and is pitifully short on life experiences, but she makes up for it by being a keen listener, and an attentive audience. Well..when she doesn't fall asleep ^.~ As she notices your gaze, Ping lets out a soft chirr and flashes you a smile, tilting her head a little in a playful, catlike manner.

Anthro

Petite at just over four and a half feet, this particular lizardly creature is hardly one to stand out at first glance, even counting her shock of bright green mane, her swirling multi-coloured eyes, and her well-proportioned frame. Of course, much of that frame is concealed by the rather severe lines of her dress - it outlines hips, shoulders and the swell of her chest, while at the same time keeping those features in fairly strict conformance.
The dress itself is distinctly Oriental in styling, made of a dark satiny material with Eastern dragons picked out in silver thread. It suggests something of the kimono, without the voluminous folds that characterise that garment. It certainly doesn't stop her being lithe in her movements, either - not this lizard! Where blue scales are visible, they glisten with health, supple and smooth. And her motions are anything but stiff, the lizard moving with an unconscious grace quite at odds to the good-natured clumsiness that most know her for; each step she takes is coordinated, from the set of her neck to the long tail that emerges from a slit at the back of her dress, the slender length swaying to balance the rest of her body with a tip tufted the same green as her mane barely clearing the ground.
Her feet are as bare as always, strong toes and claws able to grip and help balance of their own accord. The middle toe of each paw sports a single silver ring, however, fine chains linking them to larger rings that sit around each ankle, making a soft jingling sound as she moves.

Hrrrrrrrrm

Winter

Blue-scaled as always, the little lizard nevertheless looks somewhat.. different. Those scales of hers are finely placed and almost too small to tell apart, doing nothing to break the pale shade of ice-blue that covers her from head to silver-chained toes. And those chains aren't the only place marked with silver - mingled in amongst her shock of green mane, twined and braided into place, is a cascade of fine silver threads that pool about her shoulders before plunging down along the lizard's front and back, clinging in all the right spots to give her some degree of dignity while at the same time showing off every smooth curve of the body beneath - accentuating hips, chest and snugging close about the base of her tapered tail.
Along the upper surface of that tail (as well as muzzle, eyeridges, shoulders and breasts), a delicate white tracery marks her body; spiderweb 'cracks' in the ice. From these markings a faint, constant stream of misty condensation flows: cooler air meeting the warmth around her and roiling its way down to gather about her feet. Her expressive earfins sport a series of tiny chain-linked piercings along the edge of each membrane, every little twitch and twist sending the links jingling softly against one another.
